Drought 2000 Photos 2
Bees are ready to pollinate this cucumber field, if the plants get some water to get growing.....
Poorly pollinated cukes don't develop fully. Both these cukes are the same age, but the top one didn't have enough bee visits to fertilize all the seeds. Plants that are stressed by lack of water, don't produce much nectar to stay attractive to the bees. We want 15-20 visits to each female flower to guarantee good cukes.. |
And here comes the water!
Overhead irrigation is expensive and wasteful; hot, dry winds take away a lot
of the water.
But farmers who cannot irrigate are in serious trouble this year.
